Overview

Complementary and holistic therapies have been seen to have many health benefits. Our course has been designed to teach you how to correctly perform a variety of therapies to support recovery from ailments and treat the mind, body and spirit. You will learn specialist techniques in Reflexology, Swedish Massage and Aromatherapy.

As part of the course, you will also complete a business unit for complimentary therapies, providing you with the relevant business acumen needed to start your own business. Students are trained to industry standards, and will be expected to carry out treatments on members of the public within a realistic salon environment.

You will also be required to carry out case studies to support your knowledge and understanding, and some of these will need to be carried out in your own time. A degree of research and time allocated for homework in your own time will also be required of you.

Course objectives

To enable the student to gain competence in holistic therapies, so that employment or self-employment may be gained:

  • Develop an understanding of the principles and theories surrounding complementary therapies
  • Learn the techniques of Reflexology, Swedish Massage and Aromatherapy
  • Understand the complementary therapy market
  • Produce your own portfolio of work

Entry requirements

There are no qualification prerequisites for this course, but you must have good literacy skills to be able to complete the assignments and study required for successful completion.

You must be physically fit enough to complete the practical massage application and be able to attend all classes.

Modules

This is a comprehensive course, in which you will study the theories behind each massage therapy, gain the practical skills in each therapy, whilst studying and relating anatomy, physiology and pathology to your work.

You will also complete a business unit for complimentary therapies, providing you with the relevant business acumen needed to start your own business. Students are trained to industry standards, and will be expected to carry out treatments on members of the public within a realistic salon environment.

You will also be required to carry out case studies to support your knowledge and understanding, and some of these will need to be carried out in your own time. A degree of research and time allocated for homework in your own time will also be required of you.

Assessment and exam information

There will be a written exam for each practical unit, and an online multiple choice exam for anatomy and physiology.

You will produce assignments throughout the course which will be entered as portfolio evidence. You will be practically assessed on numerous occasions to prove competency and will have a final assessment via an independent assessor.

This course does not have any work experience.

Learner progression

Once completing the course, you can progress into higher levels of study for Beauty Therapy.

Your career

Successful completion of the course can lead to other specialist courses, such as sports massage, deep tissue massage, massage for cancer sufferers, hot stone massage and auricular therapy; or lead you into employment in spa’s or salons.

Fee information

Course costs

If you are under 19 on 31 August in the year you start your course, and a UK or EU resident, you won’t need to pay tuition or examination fees. Depending on your household income, you may also be able to get help towards travel, accommodation, essential equipment or childcare costs.

Additional costs

A plain black tunic (order forms are available from College if required), black trousers or skirt and flat, fully enclosed shoes. An examination re-sit fee of £25.00 if required.

You will need to purchase as Aromatherapy kit (approximately around £98) to enable you to complete your case studies. You will need a folder in order to produce your portfolio, and use of a computer in your own time is advisable.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
