Overview

If you have aspirations of a career in a hairdresser or spa, our Hairdressing Level 2 course teaches you the skills and techniques required for the role.

You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals that are essential for a nationally recognised qualification in hairdressing. The course is taught in a state-of-the-art industry salon, with specialist equipment and reception area – enabling students to gain invaluable real-world experience, with real clients.

As part of the course, students will be able to be involved in a range of extra-curricular activities and community projects – including Totton Carnival.

 

Course objectives

You will gain expertise in techniques such as; colouring, cutting, perming and dressing hair and gain the qualifications to enable you to carry out hairdressing services. You will leave the course understanding more about the hairdressing industry and ready for work:

  • Learn the techniques for colouring and perming hair
  • Develop your cutting and dressing hair skills
  • Enhance your dexterity
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of hair styling and treatments

Entry requirements

A Level 1 Hairdressing qualification or industry experience.

The course is designed for anyone looking to gain the basic skills to become a hairdresser.

Modules

You will study a range of units alongside the anatomy and physiology and the science behind each technical service. Modules may include:

Working in the Hair & Beauty industry
Research other treatments and services relevant to the industry as well as understanding working practices.

Client care & communication

Shampoo & Condition
Learn about the hair and scalp – Including massage techniques

Plaiting and twisting hair
You will also explore cultural hair diversity and how hair can be considered as an expression of individuality.

Promote products and services

Cut Women’s Hair
Learn how to cut women’s hair into basic one length, uniform layered and graduated looks.

Colour and Lighten Hair
Learn colour application of full head, regrowth, pulled through and woven highlights using basic techniques.

Perm and Neutralise Hair
Understand different winding techniques.

The Art of Dressing Hair
Learn the correct techniques for blow-drying, setting and finger drying.

Create an image based on a theme
To be presented either in a photo shoot or competition

Assessment and exam information

You will be assessed through a combination of written, oral, practical and online assessments.

 

Career and progression

Work experience

You will be provided with opportunities to engage in work experience.

Enrichment opportunities

Extra-curricular activities and community projects will be included, for example at Totton Carnival. Enrichments such as makeup, nail art and manicures

Learner progression

This qualification provides progression opportunities for those with intentions of working in a salon or onto a Level 3 qualification

Your career

You will be able to become a hairdresser in a salon or be self-employed.

 

Fee information

Course costs

If you are under 19 on 31 August in the year you start your course, and a UK or EU resident, you won’t need to pay tuition or examination fees. Depending on your household income, you may also be able to get help towards travel, accommodation, essential equipment or childcare costs.

A kit and a uniform will need to be purchased. Ask for details.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
