This course will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the fundamental skills – including colouring, perming, cutting and treatments – that are essential for a nationally recognised qualification in hairdressing. You’ll be taught in our state-of-the-art Opus Salon, with specialist equipment and reception area, enabling you to gain valuable experience with real clients. As part of the course, students are able to get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities and community projects, including Totton Carnival.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over. Eligible learners will be enrolling on a level 3 or above course and are a UK or EU national. For further information, visit gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) and above, including Maths and English, or a Level 1 qualification in Hairdressing. Learners who do not have grade 4 or above in English and/ or Maths study them alongside their course.

What will I learn?

You’ll gain expertise in techniques such as colouring, cutting, perming and dressing hair, gaining the qualifications you need to carry out hairdressing services. By the end of the course, you’ll understand more about the hairdressing industry and be ready for work:

Work Experience

You’ll take part in two one-week blocks of work experience during the year. Alternatively, you can do six hours a day one day a week.
You can also request additional days.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed through a combination of written, oral, practical and online assessments.

Enrichment Opportunities

Career and Progression

You can progress to a Level 3 qualification in Hairdressing, which is highly desirable within the industry. You can also choose to start your career with an apprenticeship in a salon.
