Are you considering a career in hairdressing? Our hairdressing level 2 apprenticeship will teach you the fundamental skills to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for both ladies and men. Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men. Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types, ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over. Entry requirements

A minimum of maths and English GCSE grade 3/D or equivalent or the ability to achieve a Level 1 functional skill.

You must achieve Level 2 English and maths prior to taking the final assessment.

Learners with an EHCP will be reviewed on an individual basis

Work Experience

The apprenticeship is work experience based, so this will depend on the employment contract you agree to.

Modules

You’ll study mandatory core skills and knowledge for hairdressing and barbering. Depending on the apprenticeship route chosen, you’ll do the following modules.

Route 1 – Hairdressing

Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks

Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks

Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques

You’ll also have the chance to learn about perming hair, hair relaxing treatments and techniques and hair extension services.

Route 2 – Barbering

Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

Cutting hair using barbering, techniques to create a variety of looks

Style and finish men’s hair

Cut facial hair into shape

Shaving services

You’ll also learn about the types of blades available, lathering products, the structure and function of the skin, the scalp and facial skin disorders commonly affecting men, lathering and the function it performs on the skin, in-growing hairs, and the effect of heat on the hair and skin, as well as the use of Personal Protective Equipment.

Assessment

Once you’ve passed the on-programme assessment and all units, and come to an agreement with your training provider and employer that you’re ready, you’ll be put forward for the end-point assessment.

This takes place in an agreed-upon location and is assessed by an Independent Assessment Examiner appointed by the Registered Apprentice Assessment.

Career and Progression

Once you’ve completed this apprenticeship, you will be eligible for State Registration with the Hair Council.

As an apprentice, you’ll be able to pursue a career as a hairstylist or barber following the completion of your apprenticeship.
