Our level 3 Beauty Therapy course provides you with the essential advanced knowledge and skills required for a career in beauty therapy.  It is delivered by a highly qualified and skilled team of practitioners, each with over 20 years’ experience within the beauty industry.

You will have the chance to get to know the industry and different roles available, enabling you to research all the possible career pathways, as well as develop practical skills needed for you to progress. The course is taught in a state-of-the-art industry standard salon, with specialist equipment and reception area – enabling students to gain invaluable real-world experience.

The course covers both the treatments and customer service skills to support your professional development, as well as support with understanding the complexities of human anatomy and physiology, an essential part of your treatment understanding and reasoning. Having previously mastered the foundation skills of basic beauty therapy treatments, you will acquire the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to competently apply advanced techniques, that can lead to higher education and the possibility of working towards management positions.


Course objectives 

  • Develop advanced practitioner level of treatment application and understanding
  • Improve your communication, presentation and reflective practice, to enable you to be a confident and knowledgeable independent practitioner
  • Have a working knowledge of the everyday running of a real salon and develop leadership skills through mentoring junior students

1 year – Introductory Diploma
2 years – Extended Diploma

The extended diploma qualification is equivalent to three A Levels, although some students opt to take the one-year subsidiary diploma which is equivalent to one A Level.


Delivered on:

Full-time: 2 days per week

Part-time: adult only evening classes are also available


Level 3 Diploma

Entry requirements

You must have previously completed an NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification or equivalent.  You must also possess a good level of English, the manual dexterity to perform the service and a genuine interest in the subject.

Additional requirements

GCSE’s above C or level 4 in English and Maths, with a C or level 4 in Science desirable.

Ideal for those wanting to progress in a Beauty Therapy related career, such as spa work or progression onto management and can also lead to higher education.

You will study a range of units alongside the anatomy and physiology and the science behind each technical service. Modules may include:

Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
Understand the procedures involved to maintain health and safety at work

Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
Learn the fundamental principles involved in promoting a business’s operating in the beauty therapy industry

Provide body electrical treatments
Learn the techniques involved in providing specialist body electrical treatments to clients

Provide facial electrical treatments
Learn the techniques involved in providing specialist facial electrical treatments to clients

Provide body massage treatments
Gain the necessary skills and techniques required to perform body massage treatments

Provide electrical epilation treatments
Gain the necessary skills and techniques required to perform electrical epilation treatments

Provide Indian head massage
Learn the specialist techniques required to perform traditional Indian head massage treatments

Provide stone therapy treatments
Learn the specialist techniques required to perform stone therapy treatments

Assessment and exam information

A combination of practical tasks, knowledge and understanding online questions, online exams and oral questioning.

In addition, a number of clinic hours will also need to be completed outside of your teaching timetable, as well as at least 3 to 4 hours per week of self-directed study.


Career and progression

Work experience

Students will be working with real clients in the Opus Salon as part of the course and will also be required to undertake at least 60 hours of work experience, with an additional opportunity to increase employability by undertaking 350 hours.

Enrichment opportunities

Extra-curricular activities and community projects will be included, and participation is mandatory for some (cost may apply for additional professional certifications), as well as trips the national beauty exhibition in London.

You are encouraged to take part in college extracurricular activities and an exercise and you will be required to participate in weekly health and wellness classes that incorporate various forms of exercise and training, as well as mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

Learner progression

Once completing the course, you can progress into higher education through various universities around the country, to further develop your understanding and skills in Beauty Therapy.  These can be studied up to a master’s level.

If you choose not to continue your studies, then many employment opportunities await.  Your qualification is internationally recognised and will allow you to work in salons and spas.

Fee information

Course costs

If you are under 19 on 31 August in the year you start your course, and a UK or EU resident, you won’t need to pay tuition or examination fees. Depending on your household income, you may also be able to get help towards travel, accommodation, essential equipment or childcare costs.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
