This one-year, full-time course will give you the skills you need for employment in the public services. This course combines practical and classroom application to ensure you gather experience first-hand from industry professionals such as the Police, Armed Forces, Fire and Ambulance Services, as well as practical trips and exercises.

Course content

The NCFE Level 2 Diploma is a one year course, with a focus on providing a pathway to employment specific to students’ needs. The course includes the following units:

  • Public Service Skills: Students investigate the importance of teamwork and communication
  • Career Planning
  • Improving Health and Fitness: For entry to the Uniformed Public Services in preparation for joining a service and looking at basic nutrition and your fitness, where you are required to undertake fitness tests.
  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services: Understand the main responsibilities of different uniformed public service

Enrichment opportunities:

This course includes a range of enrichment opportunities, including visits to Armed Forces establishments, as well as events arranged through the public services, including the police and fire service.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed based on a submitted portfolio of work. Each unit is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the quality of your work.


Entry requirements: 

GCSEs mostly at grade 3 (D) or a Merit or higher in a BTEC Level 1 vocational Diploma.

Work experience:

All Totton College students have the benefit of undertaking at least 60 hours of relevant work experience to support their studies, gain experience and potentially develop contacts with future employers. Our careers team is available to help students secure work placements.

What can I do next?

This course provides a direct pathway into employment in the armed forces, emergency services or prison service, or you can choose to study for the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma if you achieve at least a Merit plus a grade C in English.
