This one-year, full-time course will give you the skills you need for employment in the public services. It combines adventure training with practical and classroom application to ensure you get experience first-hand from industry professionals.

Funding and bursaries

Students if you’re aged over 19 you may be eligible for free tuition depending on the course you want to study, your existing qualifications and your financial circumstances. For more information email or call 023 8087 4874.

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over. Eligible learners will be enrolling on a level 3 or above course and are a UK or EU national. For further information, visit

Entry requirements

GCSEs mostly at grade 3 (D) or a Merit or higher in a Level 1 vocational Diploma.

What will I learn?

The Level 2 Diploma covers various aspects of employment and will look at the selection of the service you want to apply to. You will study the following units:

Public service skills – where you will investigate the importance of teamwork and communication
Career planning for the public services
Improving health and fitness and nutrition – in preparation for joining a service, during which you will undertake fitness tests
Employment in the uniformed public services – understanding the main responsibilities of different uniformed public services
The course features practical activities, visits to armed forces establishments and taking part in events arranged through the public services, including the police and fire service.


You will be assessed through practical and written assignments and additional activities.

Career and Progression

You may wish to apply directly to the armed forces, emergency services or prison service, although most students progress to study a Level 3 Public Services course. Previous students have gone on to careers including becoming a police officer, PCSO, public house manager and customer service manager.
