This course is ideal if you are interested in becoming a potential recruit to the uniformed public services. It will enable you to develop your skills in a range of areas, from physical fitness and team work to map reading. In addition, the course will provide a basis for further study and progression towards the entry qualification of a specific service. It will also provide an insight into the practical qualities required, not only for uniformed services, but also for employment in general.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over. Entry requirements

At least three GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D), or a Merit or Distinction at BTEC Level 1. A strong interest in working in the uniformed public services is desirable.

What will I learn?

The Level 2 Diploma covers various aspects of employment and will look at the selection of the service you want to apply to. You will study the following units:

Public service skills – where you will investigate the importance of teamwork and communication
Career planning for the public services
Improving health and fitness and nutrition – in preparation for joining a service, during which you will undertake fitness tests
Employment in the uniformed public services – understanding the main responsibilities of different uniformed public services
The course features practical activities, visits to armed forces establishments and taking part in events arranged through the public services, including the police and fire service.

Assessment

You will be assessed through written and practical assignments. Currently, there are no examinations for this course.

Career and Progression

: If you achieve a Merit and have grade 4 (grade C) in English and Maths you can progress to a Level 3 course. Alternatively, you can move on to employment or an apprenticeship.
