Course content

The science sector is large and diverse, leading to opportunities in biomedical, pharmaceutical, food, forensic, dental, health, physical and chemical industries. This practical Level 2 course provides an excellent qualification for those wishing to work in a laboratory environment. The six mandatory units comprise:

  • Laboratory health and safety
  • Working in a science laboratory
  • Assisting in laboratory activities
  • Preparing and clearing down a laboratory
  • Handling scientific data
  • Planning a scientific investigation

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through assignments and exams.


Entry requirements: 

A science GCSE at grade 3 (grade D), as well as grade 4 (C) in English and maths.

Enrichment opportunities:

Students may have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and get involved in relevant activities and events.

What can I do next?

Many students move on to an apprenticeship or employment in a science laboratory setting, while others choose to continue studying for a Level 3 qualification and broaden their career options. Students can go on to work in any laboratory environment, which lead on to very interesting industrial roles.
