This course provides you with the advanced knowledge and skills required for a career in hairdressing. You’ll research all the possible career pathways in the industry and develop the practical skills needed for you to progress. This course covers advanced techniques in cutting, colouring and perming, as well as customer service skills. You’ll also have the chance to get involved in a range of exciting extra-curricular activities and community projects, including Totton Carnival.

Entry requirements

At least four GCSEs grade 4 (grade C) or above including English and maths, and a completed an NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing qualification or equivalent industry experience.

These grades can be flexible and discussed upon entry.

What will I learn?

You’ll gain expertise in techniques such as colouring, cutting, perming and dressing hair, gaining the qualifications you need to carry out hairdressing services. By the end of the course, you’ll understand more about the hairdressing industry and be ready for work:

  • Learn the techniques for colouring and perming hair
  • Develop your cutting and dressing hair skills
  • Enhance your dexterity
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of hair styling and treatments


  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practices in the salon
  • Consultation support for colleagues on hair services
  • Cut women’s hair to create a variety of looks
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Hair colour correction
  • Men’s hair cutting
  • Colour hair to create a variety of looks

These units are subject to change.


You’ll be assessed through a combination of portfolio evidence, practical tests, and either knowledge and understanding tasks or an online test.

Enrichment opportunities

Extra-curricular activities and community projects will be included, for example at Totton Carnival.

There are enrichments in topics such as make up, nail art and manicures.

Career and progression

You can progress to university and continue to develop your skills. If you’d rather start your career, this internationally-recognised qualification will allow you to work in salons and spas, as well as on cruise ships or contracts in the Caribbean, Canada, UAE and Europe.
