If you’re looking for a rewarding career within the care sector, our course will help you to achieve your ambition. You will learn more about how the industry and will be taught the practical skills and theory needed for the sector. As part of your course, you will also have the opportunity to complete a minimum of 35 hours of work experience, enabling you to build your professional portfolio and confidence.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) and above, including maths and English, or a Level 1 Diploma in Care or Health and Social Care. Students who do not have grade 4 or above in English and/or maths study them alongside their course. 

Course Overview

For students looking to study Child Care and Health and Social Care in Southampton and the New Forest, our Care: Child, Health and Social Futures Level 2 course is designed to support your understanding of the sector and to start building your skillset for this rewarding career.  

Our course will help you cover the fundamentals needed for the sector and prepare you to progress to a Level 3 qualification or to assist with progression into the workplace or an apprenticeship. 

You will gain the essential qualifications, confidence, knowledge and understanding across a range of key subject areas in health and social care. 

What will I learn?

Our Care: Child, Health and Social Futures course is based on the Nacro Education Get Set! framework, enabling you to gain critical and transferable skills that you need to progress onto your next step and help build your CV.  

As part of this course, you will learn a broad range of skills, including communication, creativity, problem-solving, project management and digital.  

You will also cover a range of specialist areas relating to the sector such as health and safety, legislation, frameworks and the role and responsibilities for practitioners.  

In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn maths and English as part of this course. 

Work Experience

As part of the Nacro Education Get Set! framework, we encourage all students to engage in enrichment activities to support your learning.  

You will be required to complete 35 hours of work experience during the college year. This can be undertaken throughout the year or during the two work experience weeks, one in February before the half-term break and the other the week before the Easter holiday.  

These placements are designed to support your learning by providing opportunities for you to apply knowledge to practice, receive feedback, and reflect on your own experiences. Placement also provides opportunities for you to observe professional practice in action and gain valuable employability skills. 

In addition, you will be able to visit local care homes and be taught by guest speakers who will share their knowledge, experience and advice to support your progression. 

Modules

Modules for the Care: Child, Health and Social Futures Level 2 will take place in both practical sessions and theoretical lessons. These include:  

  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care  
  • Human growth and development  
  • Safeguarding and protection in health and social care  
  • Communication in health and social care  
  • Working in health and social care 
  • Creative activities in health and social care  
  • Dementia awareness  

Assessment

At Totton College, we use a variety of assessment methods to ensure you achieve the Care: Child, Health and Social Futures Level 2 qualification.  

Modules are assessed in the form of a portfolio of work, this could include observations on practical tasks, leaflets, posters, written assessments and presentations. You will be supported with all your work and your teacher will go through all this when you sign up for the course. 

The assessments take place throughout the year and all modules are internally graded A* – D. 

Enrichment Opportunities

We normally have a range of outside speakers from the local field of Health & Social Care. You’ll also get the chance to go on trips to appropriate Health & Social Care settings.

  • Plan and produce creative activities for individuals to participate in  
  • Visit to a local Care home 
  • Guest speakers  

Career and Progression

After successfully passing this course, you will have the core knowledge to progress to a higher-level qualification and to move forward towards your chosen career.

On successful completion of this course, you will achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, and you will be able to progress onto a Level 3 course within the subject area.  

You may also wish to discuss career options with the college career advisor prior to completion of the course to investigate possible apprenticeships or entry-level employment. Our courses support progression with a range of job roles such as support work in adult residential settings, healthcare assistants and support workers. 

During the course, I have learned the fundamentals for any job in the Health and Social Care sector, covering topics like safeguarding, human growth and development, equality and diversity, as well as government legislation and policies. This is a good gateway for many career paths, making it ideal for someone unsure about their future. What I enjoy most about my course is the kind, supportive and understanding from everyone, no matter what you're going through, which has been a huge help for me, especially as someone who struggles with mental health. My proudest achievement at Totton College has been developing my confidence and overcoming my anxiety, as I used to have trouble leaving the house. After I leave Totton College, I aspire to become a Drug and Alcohol Support Worker.

Funding and bursaries

Students if you’re aged over 19 you may be eligible for free tuition depending on the course you want to study, your existing qualifications and your financial circumstances. For more information email info@totton.ac.uk or call 023 8087 4874.

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
