Dr Maxine Room CBE

Maxine Room joined Totton College as Campus Principal in October 2017. She is an experienced College Principal who has led innovative work in the sector. Maxine has always worked in further education and is passionate about education, training and skills. She joins us from the principalship of LeSoCo, Lewisham College and Southwark College in London, a post that she took up in 2007 prior to its merger, working with its diverse student population. Prior to that, she was Principal of Park Lane Campus, Leeds City College, where she was instrumental in instigating the merger of three Leeds colleges, and before that Swansea College and Bridgwater College.

Maxine is a skilled leader and manager and has accrued a vast experience of the business of further education including curriculum and quality, employer engagement, community development, merger and capital build. She is passionate about inclusivity and equality of opportunity.

She has coached and mentored throughout her career, initially as part of the Network for Black Professionals and the Black Leadership Initiative. She is a Board member for the Northern Ballet Theatre, and trustee and patron of the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival as well as the Helena Kennedy Foundation, which strives to overcome social injustice by providing financial bursaries, mentoring and support to disadvantaged students from further and adult education sectors.

She is working with us for 12-18 months, supported by Vice Principal Hannah Avoth.
