If you have a passion for learning more about beauty techniques, this course is designed for those who want to learn the foundational skills behind a wide range of beauty therapies. You will learn how to perform a range of treatments and have the opportunity to work with real clients in Opus Salon. From studying our course, you will gain the confidence to take your learning further or pursue options in the sector.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 and above, including maths and English, or a Level 1 Diploma in Beauty Therapy. Students who do not have grade 4 or above in English and/or maths study them alongside their course. 

Course overview 

For students looking to study beauty therapy and hairdressing in Southampton and the New Forest, our Beauty Therapy Futures Level 2 course is ideal if you want to learn the essential beauty therapy techniques. For those considering a career working as a therapist in salons, spas, working independently or hotels, our course is designed to support you in achieving this ambition. 

You will gain the confidence and ability to use the techniques and theory behind a wide range of beauty treatments. From the beginning, you will work in our state-of-the-art Opus Salon, treating real clients to a commercial standard of therapies with the support of our highly qualified tutors.  

You will cover a variety of practical and theory-based activities. You will cover beauty treatments combined with industry background skills including health, safety and industry standards.  

Alongside your course, you will also gain valuable work experience with the opportunity to work in a local salon. If you were not successful in achieving your GSCE grade 4 or above you will have the opportunity to work towards this. You will also be involved in a range of extracurricular activities and community projects, including Totton Carnival. 

What will I learn?

Our beauty therapy and hairdressing courses are based on the Nacro Education Get Set! framework, enabling you to gain critical and transferable skills you need to progress onto your next step and help build your CV.  

As part of this course, you will learn a broad range of skills, including customer communication and teamwork. You will also learn about how the beauty industry focuses on products that are good for the planet and consumer health. Products are becoming more sustainable, and you will learn how these are created ensuring they’re environmentally friendly. 

As part of this course, you will also learn from industry professionals within the beauty field to talk about their careers and provide insight to support your portfolio and professional development.  

In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn maths and English as part of this course. 

Work Experience

As part of the Get Set! framework, we encourage all students to engage in enrichment activities to support your learning.  

You will be required to complete 60 hours of work experience during the college year. This can be undertaken throughout the year or during the two work experience weeks, one in February before the half-term break and the other the week before the Easter holiday.  

Our work experience department is there to help you obtain a suitable work experience place. 

You will receive weekly progress coaching to ensure that you are up to date with each course unit, together with help to move towards the work sector. 

Modules

Modules for the Beauty Therapy Futures Level 2 will take place in both practical sessions and theoretical lessons. These include:  

  • Working in the beauty-related industries 
  • Follow health and safety practices in the salon 
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries 
  • Provide facial skin care 
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon 
  • Remove hair using waxing techniques 
  • Provide manicure treatments 
  • Provide pedicure treatments 
  • Apply make-up 
  • Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments 
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector 
  • Salon Reception duties 

Assessment

At Totton College, we use a variety of assessment methods to ensure you achieve the Beauty Therapy Futures Level 2 qualification.  

Modules are assessed in the form of a portfolio of work; this could include observations on practical tasks or written assessments. You will be supported with all your work and your teacher will go through all this when you sign up for the course. 

Each unit consists of practical assessments and online exam to demonstrate your professional skills, communication and practical activity. Coursework will need to be completed before the above assessments and exams take place. These will be spread throughout the academic year.  

Enrichment Opportunities

As part of the course, you get the chance to be involved in a range of extra-curricular activities and community projects – including Totton Carnival.

Career and Progression

After successfully passing this course, you will have core knowledge to progress to a higher-level qualification and to move forward towards your chosen career.

On successful completion of this course, you will achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, and you will be able to progress onto our Level 3 Beauty Therapy course. 

You may also wish to discuss career options with the college careers advisor prior to completion of the course to investigate possible apprenticeships or entry level employment. 

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
