Apprenticeships

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job that allows you to earn money in your chosen sector, while gaining industry-recognised qualifications that will help you to progress in your career.

Does Totton College offer apprenticeships?

If you’re interested in hospitality, catering, retail, office-based work or other practical careers, you can train on the job as an apprentice. If you’re aged 16-24 and already have a job you can apply for a paid apprenticeship which will give you qualifications and practical experience of the workplace. Apprenticeships last a minimum of one year and a maximum of 18 months. You can complete a Level 2 apprenticeship and then progress to a Level 3 apprenticeship depending on where you work. Search our apprenticeships here.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Anyone who is a UK resident, aged 16 or over and not in full-time education can apply for an apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships are free to access, but your employer may need to make a contribution to the cost of the training element of the apprenticeship; this varies based on the size of the employer and the content and complexity of the learning.

Apprenticeship levels explained

You can undertake an apprenticeship from Level 2 (Intermediate) right up to Level 7 (Higher). After you finish school it is likely you will enrol on a Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship and then work your way up through the different levels.

How can I apply for an apprenticeship?

To do an apprenticeship, it is necessary to find an employer willing to take on an apprentice. You can do this by:

  1. Searching for vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Service website.
  2. Looking for employers willing to take on an apprentice independently. Your local council, nearby colleges and career services may be able to help with finding an employer who is likely to do this.

If you are already employed

If you are employed already and your employer has agreed to you undertaking an apprenticeship call us on 023 8087 4874 or email us on apprenticeships@totton.ac.uk. We will invite you to come to the College to meet the team and have an interview and initial assessment. This will help us to gauge if an apprenticeship is the right route for you and what the appropriate level is for you.

N.B. You can apply for an apprenticeship without an employer but you will need to secure an employed position for 30+ hours before you start the programme.

If you are not employed

You should research the industry you are interested in and:

  • look at the job role
  • make sure your CV is up-to-date
  • look at the requirements for the qualification to check if you meet the entry criteria for the programme that interests you

How much will I get paid?

The current national minimum wage for apprentices is £3.50 an hour (although this may vary for agricultural apprenticeships). This applies to apprentices aged 16-18 and those aged 19 who are in the first year of their apprenticeship. If you are 19 and have completed your first year, you should be paid the national minimum wage rate for your age.

Traineeships

What is a traineeship?

Traineeships are designed help young people who want to get an apprenticeship or job but don’t yet have appropriate skills or experience.

Does Totton College offer traineeships?

At Totton College, we want you to be ready for work. That’s one of the reasons we offer traineeships to 16-24 year olds. Tailored specifically to your individual needs, they allow you to complete a work placement for up to six months in a job of your choice. When you finish you’ll leave with a reference from your employer. Traineeships can often lead to a paid apprenticeship, too.

  • Have the opportunity to network with prospective employers
  • Improve English and maths skills

Who can do a traineeship?

Anyone aged 16-24, who is motivated to get a job but lacks the skills and experience that employers are looking for. You don’t need any skills or experience as traineeships provide all the essential work preparation training. Traineeships can also be taken by young people up to the age of 25 who have learning difficulty assessments.

The intention is that traineeships will be for:

  • those who are not currently in a job and don’t have enough work experience
  • those who want to work
  • those who are qualified below A or AS Level or other Level 3 qualifications

If you have been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or other job due to a lack of skills and experience, you will most likely be a good candidate for a traineeship.

Will I get paid?

Employers are not required to pay trainees for the work placement under the traineeship. Traineeships are exempt from the Minimum Wage. Young people taking part in traineeships will be undertaking education and training and some may qualify for financial support, including the 16-19 Bursary Fund.

Internships

What is a supported internship?

A supported internship is a structured study programme based primarily at an employer. It enables young people aged 16-24 with a statement of SEN, a Learning Difficulty Assessment or an Education, Health and Care plan to achieve a pathway to paid employment by equipping them with the skills they need for work, through learning in the workplace. Supported internships last for a minimum of six months.

You will:

  • Get personalised support from a mentor while you learn
  • Have better long-term salary prospects
  • Have the opportunity to network with prospective employers
  • Improve English and maths skills

Who can do a supported internship?

Anyone aged 16-24 with a statement of SEN, a Learning Difficulty Assessment or an Education, Health and Care plan.
