Students from the Totton College Creative Media Department, successfully pitched a new digital strategy for a personal training company based in Southampton. Resulting in the team securing a work experience agreement to develop and implement a new digital presence for the company, including new videos and social media strategy.

After originally enquiring about filming promotional content for their website, Brightside Personal Training, agreed to meet students to discuss their content requirements. The team had conducted a full analysis of their online presence including an in-depth review of Brightside Personal Training’s website and social media, suggesting how these could be improved. The pitch was part of the students’ professional development, to enable them to gain first-hand experience of what it is like to contact a client, pitch their proposal and implement a fully costed digital marketing plan.

Speaking about their experience, Andrew Menhennet, Year 2 Creative Media Student, who was part of the pitching team said: “I have the opportunity to work with a real client. They have expectations and we have to meet those expectations with a great amount of professionalism. We are working outside of the college environment; we decide how the production will run, from pre to post production. We collaborated with the client to find out what they wanted. We returned to them with a pitch and they were delighted with it. We had further discussion with the client to fine-tune the details. This opportunity has given me an insight into working as a freelancer in the creative media industry.”

Steve Launay, Creative Media Lecturer at Totton College added: “The clients were blown away by the enthusiasm and ideas that came from our students. They have approved the pitch, which means invaluable work experience not just for the year 2 students, but for all of our year 1 students who will attend the first filming day at the gym to capture as much footage as possible.”

The team have also just completed another project where they successfully produced a series of films for the NHS Southern Trust, and were praised for their professionalism and quality of work.

The vocational route enables students to learn the skills employers are actively seeking.”
