Overview

Supported Internships are aimed specifically at students with Education, Health and Care plans up to the age of 24 who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities. If they are motivated about work and want to progress to paid employment, this course can help them on the path to success.

This is a one-year programme offered to suitable existing students who are capable of gaining Entry 3 or level 1 qualification. It is designed to help them develop work skills in Customer Service. Each student will have the opportunity to work in placements both internally and externally.

Initially students will receive three days teaching until their work placements commence and thereafter one day of study and two days of work experience placement leading up to full three days’ work experience placement with a job coach to support the student and the employer.

Our Supported Internship programme is designed to improve the employability of our students. This course will support you to:

  • Develop your business acumen skills
  • Learn how to work as part of an effective team
  • Gain valuable work experience and develop your professional profile

Career and progression

Work experience

Two days’ work experience and one day at college studying Maths and English as well as employability skills.

You will be placed in an area of choice for your work experience with a job coach to support you until you have settled into the placement.

Enrichment opportunities

You will take part in a wide range of activities such as cooking, art activities and using the sensory room. You will also be able to take part in other activities, both on and off the college site like sports, trips and visits.

Learner progression

Into paid employment or mainstream subject of your choice.

Your career

To progress to volunteering, paid work with the support from our careers advisor. Career Options could include progress into paid work, or apprenticeships at level 1.

Course costs

The course is free for 16-18 year olds and students over 19 with an EHCP

Additional costs

Students will be expected to make a contribution towards cooking, trips out into the community or any equipment that maybe needed. Approximately £50.00 to £100.00.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
