This one-year, Level 3 course is carried out at our off site, fully-operational motor vehicle unit, covering both practical and theory. This course is the standardised course for assessment in diagnostics and repair and involves a technical certificate which can also support an apprenticeship. You will learn advanced skills in vehicle technology, which may lead to a career in the motor vehicle industry, or onto university to study more advanced mechanics.

Course content

This course is broken down into technical sections which includes four main vehicle areas designated by the National Occupational Standards developed by IMI. These include:

  • Chassis technology
  • Engine technology
  • Transmission technology
  • Electrical and electronic technology.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment of this course is made up of two components: IMI Awards set practical tasks and IMI Awards set online testing.


Entry requirements: 

You will need to have completed a Level 2 motor vehicle qualification.

What can I do next?

Most of our students progress onto an apprenticeship or employment in the motor vehicle industry. Past students have gone on to working in other relevant industries including engineering and motor vehicle sales.

Work experience:

All Totton College students have the benefit of undertaking at least 60 hours of relevant work experience to support their studies, gain experience and potentially develop contacts with future employers. Our careers team is available to help students secure work placements.
