Are you interested in a career in horticulture?

Our Vocational Horticultural course offers training for young people and adults who are ready to start or progress in their careers. It is ideal for those who have had a significant break or disjointed experience of education, who wish to work in the horticultural sector but need a grounding in the subject and an opportunity to develop more general employability skills.

The Level 1 course covers all the essential criteria required for a career in horticultural, whilst our Level 2 qualification provides learners the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship or further enhance their CV for the retail workspace.

You will explore a wide range of transferable technical skills and theoretical concepts to support your progression. As part of your course, you will also undertake a week’s work experience in a nurseries or garden centre to put into practice what you have been taught.

In addition, you will take part in a wide range of activities such as gardening and art activities. You will also be able to take part in other activities, both on and off the college site such as sports and day trips.

Course objectives

You will learn practical gardening skills in a realistic setting at Copthorn Nurseries with a qualified horticulturist:

• Understand the core principles of the horticultural market

• Develop your knowledge in plant production, landscaping and applying fertilizers

• Enhance your knowledge surrounding gardening and maintaining lawns

Entry requirements

Students will need to have studied an Entry 3 qualification in any subject and provide evidence of this.

Career and progression

Work experience

Students will undertake two days a week work placement at Copthorn Nurseries.

Enrichment opportunities

You will take part in a wide range of activities such as cooking, art activities. You will also be able to take part in other activities, both on and off the college site like sports, trips and visits.

Learner progression

Students can progress on to a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in horticulture, depending on what level you achieve.

This course has been designed for those who have an aspiration to be:

  • Gardener
  • Greenkeeper
  • Grounds person
  • Garden Centre worker

After completing these qualifications, you could move onto a related Level 2/3 qualification or start an Apprenticeship.

Fee information

Course costs

The course is free for 16-18 year olds and students over 19 with an EHCP

Additional costs

Students will be expected to make a contribution towards cooking, trips out into the community or any equipment that maybe needed. Approximately £50.00 to £100.00.

Funding and bursaries

Advanced Learner Loans are available for students who are aged 19 or over. Repayments do not begin until the course is completed and you are earning £25,000 or over.
