Evidence of a keen interest in art and design is essential.
It is desirable to have gained some GCSEs (grade 1 or above).
During the course, you will develop your skills in art and design work and you will have the opportunity to work in a range of 2D and 3D media. As well as developing your own use of visual language and presentation techniques, you will explore others’ art and design work and investigate art and design professional practice. You can expect to be introduced to new and exciting ways of working and you will have the opportunity to work on a large scale with some projects. Towards the end of the course, you will have the chance to choose and work on a specific art project.
The Level 1 Certificate is assessed via coursework assignments throughout the year.
A range of materials and equipment are required to complete the course. These can be purchased independently or from Totton College’s art department.
This course offers the opportunity to partake in a residential trip to London, as well as visiting local galleries and exhibitions.
Where it could take you
The vast majority of students move on to study Art and Design Level 2 at Totton College, with many progressing onto Level 3. Options then include studying our Foundation Art course before moving on to university, securing an apprenticeship or gaining employment. Past students have gone on to work as a photograph, graphic designer, furniture upholsterer and illustrator.
What our tutors say:
“Our Level 1 course is a fantastic introduction to art and design, and college life in general. The nature of the course allows students to hone in on any area of particular interest such as sculpture, photography or textiles.”
