Teacher and Level 2 Course Leader – Totton College

D Avery

“I initially joined Totton College as a Teaching Assistant in September 2012 with the aspiration to eventually become a Teacher. Within four months of starting I was given the opportunity to begin studying towards my PGCE by completing my initial qualification Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) in the evenings at Totton College.

The following year I started a distance learning program with Greenwich University. With the help of Totton College Teacher Training staff and the support of the then head of Creative Industries I was given teaching hours in the Creative Industries facility teaching Media, Art and Design and also night classes for adults in Photoshop. I started my career as a graphic designer/illustrator and I have been able to utilise this industry experience within my teaching and give my students the professional standards needed for employment or university.

I have developed and been encouraged so much by teaching staff and other colleagues throughout my four years, which has motivated me greatly and enabled me to become the teacher I am today. I started in a full-time position as a Teacher of Creative Media in September 2015 and am the Course Leader and Teacher of Level 2 Creative Digital Media, as well as teaching on all the Level 3 Creative Media and Games Development courses. My job is exciting, eventful, challenging and rewarding and I love working along side all the staff. Most important to me is teaching and supporting the students giving them the skills they need to succeed in their next chapter after Totton College.”
