About Hanger Farm

The development project at Hanger Farm Arts Centre has seen the magnificent rejuvenation of a long-time derelict 18th century barn. The financial support received has transformed the dilapidated historic infrastructure into a new centre for the arts and a facility for the local community.

Restoring a building of listed historical importance, the rejuvenation has ensured that what was rapidly becoming a target for crime and vandalism has been preserved for the enjoyment and use of generations to come. The building has not only been protected and restored but has been improved and enhanced; the original beams and threshing machinery contributing particularly to giving the centre a unique feel and a real sense of character.

“The Hanger Farm site was first recorded in Saxon times although the land may well have been in use for many years before. Amazingly the site was, it appears, in use as a farm from before the Norman invasion until the 1950’s. From the 1950’s until 2005 the site lay vacant with its ancient listed buildings deteriorating rapidly. Many uses were investigated for the buildings and in 2005 the Totton and Eling Town Council embarked on its project of turning the barn into an Arts Centre”.

The above excerpt is taken from Hanger Farm: a Thousand Years of History a booklet charting the history of the Hanger Farm site, written and compiled by Derek Biggs, Town Clerk at Totton & Eling Town Council.

If you are interested in finding out further information about the importance of the site historically and its relevance to the local area the book is available for purchase at the Arts Centre for only £3.50.
