100 Birds & Other Travels

An Exhibition by Claudia Friend & Stephanie May

until 14 August 2010

100 Birds & Other TravelsThe current exhibition at Hanger Farm Arts Centre features a hundred seagulls taking flight.  This installation has been created by artist Claudia Friend, who has created the birds simply by re-using plastic milk bottles.  The artist has used only a pair of scissors, cutting and folding into the shape of a bird.  Suspended in the air the birds silently circle the arts centre foyer.  Simple but genius and an amazing way to re use plastic which would otherwise end up in landfill.

"It's been great to see absolutely every visitor react and comment on the birds. The sheer scale and simplicity of it captures everyone's imagination.  A wonderful piece of public art in every sense. " says Programmes Co-ordinator Rob Iliffe.

Artist Claudia Friend from Southampton, was preparing a craft workshop one evening and suddenly came up with the idea to reuse a milk container.  After the first one worked, she continued to create a whole flock with help from local cafes.  Hanger Farm was delighted to host the exhibition as we aim to support artists from the local area.

The exhibition runs until 14 August, featuring the birds, original prints and work by Claudia and fellow artist Stephanie May.  Both artists will be holding a workshop for 6 – 12 year olds on Monday 25 October at the Arts Centre and is available for workshops in general for those who’d like to be creative too.

About the centre

Photograph of Outside of Hanger FarmWe are Totton College’s performing arts facility and professional community arts venue.  Within a unique Grade II listed 18th century converted barn, Hanger Farm Arts Centre is the outcome of an exciting partnership project to restore and preserve the Hanger Farm heritage site in West Totton. See the About us section for further details.

The project was made possible with financial support from Totton College, Totton & Eling Town Council, New Forest District Council, Hampshire County Council, Southern Arts and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The centre operates an exciting community theatre and arts programme, with productions by visiting companies and local amateur companies, exhibitions by local artists and showcases from the students of Totton College.

The students of Totton College have daily use of the facilities for lessons, exams and showcases. These lessons take place from 8.40am – 4.15pm with some evening rehearsals. All other times, including evenings and weekends are available for hire for performances, events and meetings.

Facilities include a gallery and rehearsal room, a main theatre space and 140-200 seat auditorium. These are also available to hire for corporate events and meetings. Please see the facilities section for more information.
