World Aids Day
Students from Totton College have been provided with information regarding HIV and other sexually transmitted Diseases on World Aids Day at Totton College.
Gary Jefferson, Senior Health Promotion Specialist from the HIV prevention Service said “It is important that young people realise that HIV is still out there and that over 7,000 people a year are being infected within the UK”.
Both the HIV and Chlamydia testing stand were very popular with students keen to find out more. Alex Langrish, a student planning to become a medic, stated “I have learnt that today there are no high risk groups in relation to HIV and AID’s, only high risk behaviours.” Jade Wilkinson will be travelling to Kenya with the College in 2010 and had a more global perspective. She said “I know the students who visited Kenya last year were shocked at the devastation brought about by the disease. When I travel there next year I will be working with many students who have been orphaned by HIV and aids. I know it will be a life changing experience”.
James Binns and all other students agreed that it was an incredibly useful event and that World Aids Day raises further awareness of the disease and the risks to everyone.
