POWER to the People…live via the web!

UK online - Getting People onlineRick Jackson brings Power FM live to the people of Netley View this Wednesday 18 July with the second UK Online Centre to be launched in The Waterside. The Centre is being managed by 'The Waterside Partnership', a partnership of voluntary organisations and agencies co-ordinated by Totton College.

The Centre is funded by the DfEE and the National Lottery through a bid made by Totton College on behalf of the Partnership. The College has raised over £350,000 on behalf of the Partnership for this and other related projects over the last year.

The centre represents a major breakthrough in providing free access to computers and the world wide web for the people of Netley View and The Waterside.

Rick Jackson, host of Power FM's 'Rick and Rachel' breakfast show will be there to officially launch the centre. He will do so by hitting the 'Listen Live' button on Power FM's own web site to bring the station live via the web to those present at the launch.

Rick will also get a tour of 'www.thewaterside.net', a 'community portal' web site which makes a great home page for all those living in The Waterside. The site provides all sorts of information about local organisations, activities and events as well as links to other local sites, including, of course, Power FM.

The site is still in its infancy but as more people use it, the content, and so its usefulness will build up and it is hoped it will become the home page of choice for everyone living in The Waterside. The question is, will Rick give it a boost by picking the site as The Breakfast Show's 'site of the day' which is a regular feature on Rick and Rachel's show?!

The centre is managed by Sarah Lakey and provides informal training on computers in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There is also high speed access to the internet that people wouldn't normally be able to afford at home.

They can use the centre for drop-in use on their own, or come to timetabled workshops with a specialist tutor. Whatever they choose, there are always friendly and helpful staff from the local community to provide a helping hand.
