Our History

Previous Totton College LogoTotton College was established as a sixth form college in September 1969 as a result of the re-organisation of post-16 education across Hampshire. It was previously a grammar school, first opened in 1955. The College is situated five miles from Southampton, in a pleasant residential area in the New Forest.

In 1988 a new sports complex was built on-site, including a swimming pool, gymnasium and recreation facilities.

In 1992, the College became responsible for the management of the Waterside Adult Education Partnership, which fully merged with the College in 1994.

In 1993, the College became independent of local authority control and became a self-governing institution. In January 1994 Mark Bramwell, the current Principal took up his post. At that time, the college was serving around seven hundred full-time students.

In 1996, the College launched the Services-to-Business unit offering specialist training for the business community through a multi-media centre located on the outskirts of Totton.

In 1998 a new Learning Resource Centre was built together with additional teaching spaces. Other improvements in accommodation at this time included a Dance Studio, Day Nursery and Sports Pavilion. In September that year, the first students joined the new Sports Academy and the College achieved 'Investors in People' status.

Why Totton?

Megan Scurr

Megan Scurr - Applemore College

Studying: Psychology, law, Biology, philosophy and Critical Thinking

I hope to go to University to study for a Psychology Degree. I have visited Bristol University, Southampton University, a Higher education fair at Portsmouth University and am on the 'Pathways to Law' programme. I am also a student Ambassador.

The college has allowed me to take five AS levels rather than four with an enhancement. They were incredibly flexible, fitting around my plans, but the decision was always mine to take. I was offered multiple opportunities within the first few months of being at the college including visiting universities all over the country.

I chose Totton College because of its great environment. I instantly felt welcome on the Taster Day and Open evening. This friendly and comfortable atmosphere hasn't changed at all since I've been here as a student. The tutors and students are comfortable with each other, and you are treated like an adult.
