Here Come the Girls
Female students from Totton College and other colleges across the region visited Solent University’s Sports Science labs to get to grips with education and career opportunities in the sporting industry.
Recruitment Officer (Education Liaison), Angie Parkinson, said: “This event is one of a number of tasters run by the Sports Science & Sports Coaching department for students from local Colleges, which gives them a practical and first hand experience of what it is like to study Sports Science at HE level.”
The girls - in post compulsory education in the area - made special visits to the facilities with their PE teachers, to encourage them to pursue careers in sports science.
Staff talked the girls through their experiences on the range of high tech equipment, measuring physical and cognitive performances, while also exploring areas of nutrition and psychology.
Totton College PE teacher, Sharon Thomas, said: “Although girls are interested in areas around sport at further education level, it seems that, for some reason, many of them don’t go on to consider it as an area for higher education study and a career route. By showing the girls what is out there for them, for instance through these facilities at Solent University, we can start giving them inspiration.”
Totton College BTEC National Diploma Sports Coaching and Development student, Lizzie Kingston, added: “It’s been great coming here to Solent and getting a feel for the ways in which Sports Science can lead to really interesting jobs.”
