Things Looking Bright at Totton College
The recently completed Cove (Centre of Vocational Excellence) building at Totton College has moved a step closer to being greener by installing solar power. The use of panels on the Cove building roof is the latest in a number of eco friendly initiatives taken up at the college such as recycling, bikes used for travelling to and from the college and energy efficient lighting and computers. Installation was made possible due to Dudley Clark, Totton College’s Sustainability representative gaining sponsorship from Marchwood Power Limited, he was also aided by Solar Century. He stated, “The energy provided by the panels enables us to show our clear commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. We will hopefully use it in an educational way through a brand new course, ‘Developing Environmental Awareness”.
The official opening of the system by Councillor Harrison, County, District and Town Councillor was held on Thursday 3rd December 2009, Cllr Harrison said,
“This is an excellent initiative involving commercial interests in the form of Marchwood Power and Totton College. Hopefully, the new solar panels will generate lots of interest as well as electricity to the benefit of all college users”.
Also attending were Jane Holman representing Marchwood Power Limited and Mark Bramwell, Totton College Principal who said, ‘As a progressive college we place the environment at the centre of what we do, our aim is to be an outstanding example of what can be achieved through raising people’s awareness of ecological issues’.
